Tikkun Olam


Temple Beth Ami’s Tikkun Olam Committee strives to help Temple members put our faith into action by assisting others in our local community and beyond. We offer a range of projects and programs aimed at fulfilling the commandment of Tikkun Olam—to help repair the world. A Wider Circle  

Touch the lives of some of the neediest in the DC area through a variety of activities, including donating furniture and household goods that are in good condition for needy families. Email Betty Shevitz, phone her at 301-294-6268, or visit http://awidercircle.org .

Christmas Dinner for the Homeless  

Help prepare and serve a festive holiday meal to local homeless citizens on Christmas Day at the Lord’s Table in St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Gaithersburg. Contact Joanne Brodsky.

B’nai B’rith Project H.O.P.E.  


Help deliver bags of Rosh Hashanah and/or Pesach necessities and goodies to Russian immigrant and other needy families in our area. Contact Mark Joffe or Joanne Brodsky.

Hebrew Home  


Help wheelchair-bound Hebrew Home residents attend Shabbat services. Adult and teen volunteers needed from 9:30–11:30 a.m. one Saturday per month. Call Ed Hopkins at 301-929-1999.

Sukkot in April/Rebuilding Together  


Join other TBA members in repairing/brightening the home of a low-income family in Montgomery County. Contact Roger Rothman or call Roger at 301-770-2176.

Senior Connection  
Senior Connection, a nonprofit that provides support to promote independent living for older adults in Montgomery County, needs volunteers to escort seniors to medical appointments; help with errands and grocery shopping; make friendly visits or phone calls; or assist with reading, writing, and paperwork. Ongoing Food Drive  

Bring nonperishable food items (canned or boxed goods) to the TBA lobby to be donated to the Manna Food Center.

Chase Partnership House  

Chase Partnership Shelter—Meals Help Needed—Volunteers are needed to help provide Thursday meals for the 36 men at the Chase Partnership House on E. Gude Drive in Rockville. Groups are asked to help cook a dinner for the men at the shelter (and to cover the cost of the meal). Individuals can form their own groups or ask to be teamed with others, sports teams can sign up to provide a meal, and Beth Ami groups and organizations can cover a Thursday as a group project. Guidance is available on menu choices and quantities. Contact Debbie Jacobs.
Community Ministries of Rockville - Kaseman Health Clinic  


Kaseman Clinic needs volunteers who are English/Spanish speaking as interpreters one day a week or twice per month for the Clinic's medical staff. For more information or to volunteer, contact Lynn Goodman or Paul Goozh.

Community Ministries of Rockville - Latino Outreach Program  

Assist in English language and American culture/customs classes for Spanish-speaking immigrants. Teen volunteers also needed to spend time with the children of the adults being tutored. Contact Lynn Goodman.

Stuff-A-Duff  


Help TBA and Child Welfare Services of Montgomery County assemble overnight duffle bags for children and teens placed into foster care on short notice. Donations and volunteers needed. Shabbat for Seniors  


Help bring the joy of Shabbat (and other Jewish holidays) to residents of Bedford Court in Silver Spring, Brighton Gardens in North Bethesda, and Renaissance Gardens at Riderwood Village in Silver Spring, by helping to lead services for those who are unable to travel elsewhere to attend services. Contact Colin Alter for Bedford Court and Brighton Gardens. Contact Allen Shapiro for Renaissance Gardens at Riderwood Village.

Ongoing Clothing Drive  

Drop off clean clothes in good condition in the Interfaith Works containers at the back of the Temple parking lot. Receipts available at http://bethami.org or in the Temple office.

Tikkun Olam Committee  


Join fellow TBA members in facilitating the Temple’s ongoing community service activities, or help start a new activity.
